No Gods Just Mothers

  • Osteria Bau Bau 11 South Saint John's Place Perth, Scotland, PH1 5SU United Kingdom (map)

No Gods, Just Mothers is a bright and multidisciplinary exhibition, rooted in themes of grief and the complex journey of survival that follows. Featuring a multidisciplinary installation of textile works, prints, publications, and sculpture, the show explores the imagery and sentiment which surrounds those attempting to remain after the loss of a child. Drawing on religious iconography and social symbolism, the show considers the human instinct to seek solace and control in systems of indoctrination and disassociation—whether through faith, indulgence, discipline, or lack there of. The works candidly link the escapist qualities of religion, intoxication and cynicism, to provide a personal overview of survival and acceptance.

At its core, No Gods, Just Mothers centres the maternal—not just in the biological sense, but as an embodied force of presence, care, and endurance. Drawing attention to the tangibility of maternal labor and loss —physical, historical, and ongoing — as something more real and urgent than the doctrine or dogma that so often overshadows. The exhibition title asserts this contrast: when prayers go unanswered and systems fail, it is the mothers—those who nurture, witness, and withstand—who remain and remain without.

While the show itself serves as a return for the artist: in practice and in memory, the collection of work does not solely rely on a confrontation of tragedy. Aesthetically archival and emotionally playful, the installation includes new ways of working for the artist. Through a colourful and playful array of mixed-media pieces, the show exists as an altar but operates to showcase a new, more fierce and slightly juvenile chapter of work.
